Kogo Pizzeria
It’s hot out. The middle of June begins a long summer of heat that can only be cut by air conditioning or a big old umbrella over your head. The breeze comes across my face every couple of minutes or so. It is more than welcome as I sip my warm single espresso. It’s a hot drink on a hot day, but it feels just right.
The people coming on and off the boats, ferries, yachts, and water taxis flood into the street. The old and distinguished rock street makes it feel partially stuck in time. People go by and revel at the beautiful buildings with stone walls and clay shingles. Cameras and phone cameras stick up and zoom all around since the interest is in more than just the ground or the buildings: it’s in the sky, the sun, and the distant hills inland.
From where I sit I can see palm trees sticking out of the edges of the busy harbor and creating shade for the lucky ones who can find a bench. Other tourists carry their heavy bags from hotels or the small cruise ships that dock. Dogs are on leashes but cats roam free. The people move for them and not the other way around.
The sounds are mostly that of chatter amongst children or groups of travelers. The other restaurants that lay across the wide street provide a clink or two of dishware or glasses. The occasional crash of a broken glass bottle grabs my attention, but there’s no trouble. The day is just starting, but sitting here feels so nice and cool.

Cafe Varenne
I got a double espresso with this very delicious croissant. Men and women alike kept coming to the bar and ordering a single espresso and standing to drink and move on. A group of women sat outside under the heated canopy smoking and chatting. As time went the canopy was lifted to let in more light into the full length windows.
It was a constant clatter of glassware as wine, beer, and water was poured at the bar. Even in the late morning on a Monday, such a variety of drinks left the bar on a serving platter both inside and out. I sat in the corner as a couple of co-workers spoke of business in English beside me. All of the servers were dressed in white long sleeved, collared shirts topped with black vests and bowties. Their aprons draped long below their knees almost to their feet which were outfitted with black dress shoes. It was a constant shuffle from table to table as they moved tables and bussed them in between visitors.
The street was a steady bustle of bikes, walkers, and small commercial vans. As I sat there never seemed to be a time where my eyes weren’t intrigued by the activity around me.
